chapter 4

1.Noel tries to get Liam stay in; Liam promises not to smoke

Noel: We’ve got an album to do here. There’s more important things to do (than going out).

Liam: Oh, I’ll be chilled tonight.

Noel: No you won’t, you’ll come back at six in the morning and you won’t be able to sing it and I’ll get REALLY pissed off.

Liam: So what have I got to do? Stay in tonight?

Noel: If you stay in, I’ll stay in. I’ll stay in and work, I’m not having a day off.

Liam: That’s what I mean, you’re getting your kicks out of work and I’ll be sat here.

Noel: The point is you should be getting your kicks out of fucking getting your voice together.

Liam: I can do that. I’ll be able to fucking do that, man. I’ve got to go out for a couple of drinks. I won’t smoke…

2.It was quite touching because he does need help (1995)

Can I ask you about the mystery that everybody wants to know about, the "Champagne Supernova" video, the help thing at the end? He probably improvised that?

Noel: It probably took him 6 hours to work that out. Improvise, are you kidding? Improvise no way. He's probably working at it for months. There was a lot of dominoes lying about and he said, "Shall I write something out?" and the director said yes so he wrote "Help", which I thought was quite touching because he does need help... shitloads of it.

3.Wonderwall is not about Meg, it's about "an imaginary friend" instead

Noel claims that “the meaning of that song was taken away" from him by the media, and it was never about Meg at all.

He told the BBC: "How do you tell your missus it's not about her once she's read it is? It's a song about an imaginary friend who's gonna come and save you from yourself."

Source: nme.com, January 2003

4.Robbie doesn't understand Noel's wrath

“Noel hates me," said Williams. "And I've never done anything to upset him. I just find it really weird - but I'm glad I spend a lot of time in his thoughts."

Source: q4music, December 2002

5.Liam'n'Robbie getting on Noel's tits

He (Robbie Williams) followed us around for a year. A full fucking year of shit jokes, bad clothes and no fucking crisps left in the dressing room when we came off stage. He was Liam's drinking buddy. It was like Chris Waddle and Glenn Hoddle. [Two footballers recording a duet; Noel stands to imitate their dancing.] It was like [their song] 'Diamond Lights'. It got on my tits in the end.

6.Brother and brother enjoy their differences and warmly embrace the similarities (1995)

Noel’s songs of hope written from the guttural don’t resonate with these people: gutters are to be avoided by well-shod feet when stepping from bright-wheeled limousines. Noel and Liam don’t give a flying fuck what people think: things are going to change. Conversation is easy; brother and brother enjoy their differences and warmly embrace the similarities.

7.All Liam wants is one person’s approval (1995)

Ian Robertson: ”These songs are superb.”

Noel: “Yeah, I know, but it’s like they don’t understand. They go to bed when they want and I just sit and play chord after chord until it’s right.

Ian: “You wouldn’t have it any other way… your control, your ego, is based on being the songwriter.”

Noel (affronted): “Robbo, I haven’t got an ego. Come on, I’m totally approachable.”

Ian: “Whoah… Noel, hold on, chap, how can you stand on that stage, give them your songs with that swagger and not have an ego?”

Noel: “Yeah, but ego? Our kid’s got fuckin’ego. What’s his problem?”

Ian: “Noel, all he wants is one person’s approval… yours. And I’ll tell you, if can find it in yourself to give it to him, then everybody’s life will be so much easier. Just one gesture from you: to say, ‘Liam, nobody could do what you do with my songs’. I don’t mean in print, Noel, but to his face, to his heart. I’m pretty sure that’ll sort out a lot of problems your brother’s having.”

Noel: “It’s not gonna happen… never. I give him my songs to sing. How much more approval does he need beyond that? He gets to sing my songs; that’s all I’ll give him.”

Ian:”That's all? ”

Noel is silent, turns away. The stage lights cut to darkness and the steady thrum of an industrial vehicle is heard.

Liam

Ian Robertson:“这些歌棒极了!”

8.‘Don’t you ever call my brother that!’ Noel roared.”

Noel overhearing Liam being called a dickhead: “Before even Liam could react, Noel was upon the guy. ‘Don’t you ever call my brother that!’ he roared.”

9.The ever-protective, ever-jealous Liam (1995), 1997

Noel crossed over to the other stage (this was the White Room performance in 1995) and performed Talk Tonight with Paul Weller backing him on electric piano and vocals. It was a performance that may well have rankled the ever-protective, ever-jealous Liam.

Liam

10.He was so gutted at what he'd done to Liam (the cricket bat incident, 1995), 1997

Meg: “We went home and he was pacing the flat and I let him pace around for a bit and he told me what he’d done to his brother and it was like a massive kick in the teeth to him that had affected him really badly. It really fucked him up. He was so gutted at what he’d done to Liam. The next day he got the word that Liam was all right, but he was still thinking, I’ve kicked the shit out of my own flesh and blood.”

Source: Getting High, the Adventures of Oasis (Paolo Hewitt, Boxtree Publishing, 1997)
